A solo traveler can park, test the neutral-gear illusion, film unique content, and leave quickly; the absence of toilets or shade is tolerable for one adult on a 20-minute stop.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for solo trip: Enough time to test the illusion, take photos, and grab a snack at the nearby café.
Test the uphill illusion by car:
Shift your car into neutral on the marked stretch.
Tip: Park safely off the road and stay in neutral until you feel the pull uphill.
Roll a water bottle:
Pour a little water on a bottle or use a toy car to watch it appear to climb the slope.
Tip: Use a transparent bottle for better video angles.
Capture unique social content:
Film your reaction and the objects moving “uphill.”
Tip: Set your phone low and use slow motion to highlight the effect.
Relax at Mystic 3° Café:
Enjoy coffee, cake, and Hallasan views just steps away.
Tip: Ask for a seat by the window for the best vantage.

In spring and autumn, surrounding wildflowers and red-leaved trees frame the road. In winter, watch for ice on the pavement. Early summer mornings are less crowded.

It's a optical illusion.. You feel road is steep but it's a illusion. Car /bus will move on with the engine off.

It's really really boring in the conventional sense but watching people try to roll cans and bottles down the hill with cars parked in neutral rolling backwards was hilarious. Definitely worth a stop if you want to see how boring it actually is

This is a short segment of road (about 50 to 80 m long, with signs indicating start and end) which appears to go uphill (optical illusion). Hence, a rolling can or car in neutral gear will seem to "roll uphill". Several cars stopped on the road, switched on hazard lights, and then either rolled forward/backward up the hill. One has to be very careful as there is traffic on the road.

Mysterious Road in Jeju, explored in February, was a fascinating encounter with an optical illusion of nature. Despite its seemingly ordinary appearance, this sloping road challenged the laws of gravity, creating an intriguing and mystifying experience. The illusion of objects rolling uphill defied logic, giving rise to a sense of wonder and curiosity. Even in the winter chill, witnessing this pec...

Took us a few rounds to test out the mysterious road phenomenon. There are signs on both sides of the road saying the Mysterious road starts here. It is not a very long stretch and one could try out this optic illusion using a bottled water or turning off the engine of the car at neutral gear to see the car/bottle going upwards on the uphill slope. Pretty cool. Highly recommend the Mystic Cafe whi...
