Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time to climb, explore the museum, watch the Timeball, and picnic.

Explore the museum base:
Discover exhibits on naval history and a life-size sailor figure.
Tip: Let children spot and count navigation instruments.
Watch the Timeball drop:
See the ball fall precisely at 1 pm daily.
Tip: Arrive 10 min early to claim a viewing spot.
Picnic on Calton Hill:
Enjoy open grass slopes with city views.
Tip: Pack a blanket and snacks. Choose a shaded spot.

I absolutely loved the panoramic view from this monument. I recommend going at the sunset hour so the sky is even prettier.

We love this part of the city. It has incredible views all the way around. It’s an easy walk from the centre. It’s great for a picnic too. Currently the monument (may 2025) is being repaired so has scaffolding and isn’t accessible, but definitely worth a visit to the park anyway.
