Positives:

  • Romantic seclusion: Fewer visitors inside the tower create a private experience for two.
  • Free hill access: Calton Hill grounds are open at no charge, perfect for a low-cost outing.

Challenges:

  • Steep narrow stairs: The 143-step spiral can feel tight; not suitable for those with mobility issues.
  • Wind exposure: The summit is unshielded; strong gusts can make the view chilly.

I absolutely loved the panoramic view from this monument. I recommend going at the sunset hour so the sky is even prettier.

It commemorates his pivotal victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where he famously lost his life. Construction of the monument began in 1807, and it was largely completed by 1816, funded by public subscription. Designed by architect Robert Burn, its unique appearance is...

We love this part of the city. It has incredible views all the way around. It’s an easy walk from the centre. It’s great for a picnic too. Currently the monument (may 2025) is being repaired so has scaffolding and isn’t accessible, but definitely worth a visit to the park anyway.

Make sure you get there at least 30 minutes before the break or last entry because it can be a bit of a wait if there are many people visiting. The view from the top is fantastic with 360 degrees around the monument! I especially love that you can see the clear top of the Author's seat an...
