How Baby-Friendly is Nelson Monument?

39%Baby-Friendly
View Map

What makes it 39% Baby-Friendly: Babies must be carried on uneven paths and cannot use strollers inside; no changing tables, no nursing room, and a steep 143-step tower greatly limit comfort, so check with staff before visiting.

(from 2,170 reviews)

Positives:

  • Open space: Wide grassy areas let your baby nap or crawl safely on a blanket.
  • Free entry: Ground-floor museum and Timeball viewing are free for families.
  • Easy viewing: You can see the Timeball drop without climbing any steps.

Challenges:

  • No stroller access upstairs: 143 steep steps block pushchairs; tower climb not suitable for babies.
  • No baby-changing tables: Toilets have no dedicated changing tables; bring a portable mat.
  • Uneven paths: Hill paths can be bumpy; best to use a carrier rather than a stroller.

The Nelson Monument, a prominent landmark on Edinburgh's Calton Hill, stands as a tribute to Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson. It commemorates his pivotal victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where he famously lost his life. Construction of the monument began in 1807, and it was largely completed by 1816, funded by public subscription. Designed by architect Robert Burn, its unique appearance is...

We love this part of the city. It has incredible views all the way around. It’s an easy walk from the centre. It’s great for a picnic too. Currently the monument (may 2025) is being repaired so has scaffolding and isn’t accessible, but definitely worth a visit to the park anyway.

I love the Nelson monument! You can't really buy the ticket in advance just get there and pay at the entrance. Make sure you get there at least 30 minutes before the break or last entry because it can be a bit of a wait if there are many people visiting. The view from the top is fantastic with 360 degrees around the monument! I especially love that you can see the clear top of the Author's seat an...
