What makes it 74% Kids-Friendly: Wide lawns allow ball games and flat 1 km loop is child-friendly, yet there is no playground and unfenced river and ponds demand constant supervision, so value is moderate.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: This timeframe lets your family walk the garden loop, enjoy a picnic and visit the fernery without rushing younger children.
Lawn-Top Picnic & Games:
Spread a blanket on the flat Iris or Mound Lawn for a family picnic and let kids kick a ball.
Tip: Bring a frisbee or soccer ball; choose shaded spots under large trees.
Easy 1 km Garden Walk:
Follow the flat Mona Vale Walk beside the Avon River to view flower borders and heritage buildings.
Tip: Use the stroller-friendly paths if kids get tired; stop at benches for breaks.
Lily Pond & Iris Garden Exploration:
Walk around the lily pond near the fernery and seek out blooming iris in season.
Tip: Visit between November and May for peak iris blooms and bring a camera for family photos.
Visit the Fernery:
Step inside the glass-roofed fernery to see native and exotic ferns in a Victorian setting.
Tip: Let kids identify different fern shapes; the fernery is sheltered in light rain.
Café Treats:
Grab ice cream, a coffee or a slice of cake at the Homestead Pantry café after exploring.
Tip: Go early to avoid queues and sit on the riverside terrace for views.

Beautiful gardens immaculately maintained. Delightful flora thoughtfully planted amongst older trees.

Just a beautiful place really. Amazing garden surrounded by the Avon river and lovely houses. Duck are very friendly too. Now the bath house is open again, it's even better. Lovey to stroll around and enjoy.

Really enjoyed the walk in this garden with everything blooming being Spring. Lots of close parking off Mona Vale Ave, cafe available part time, lots of seating dotted about, lovely river flowing through with lots of ducks and little bridges to cross. Hours open from 7am - 9pm in Summer, Winter 7am - 5.30pm. Fernery was my favorite and the stain glass gaebo, could easily spend a couple of hours lo...

At this time of year it's beautiful. So many spring flowers. The fernery is magic. Mulled wine at the café delicious 😋

A lovely place for a stroll. Benches are placed throughout the property, there is a café, and free, guided tours are offered some days (e.g., two Saturdays in May). I especially liked the Fernery, with its coolness and tranquility. People were enjoying a sunny autumn day on the café’s patio.
Visit in spring (September–November) for colorful bulbs and iris. In autumn (March–May) the gardens stay green but daylight is shorter. In winter, fewer blooms appear but the fernery remains warm and sheltered.
