What makes it 77% Kids-Friendly: Kids get mini road track, pump track, 2–5 km easy bike loops and miniature trains; free toilets and grass play exist but no playground or lifeguards near river, so close supervision is vital.
Why 2–3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to bike loops, enjoy the pump track, ride the miniature train, and have a picnic without rushing younger kids.
Short bike loops:
Ride the Coringa Loop (5 km) or River Loop (2 km) on gentle forest grades.
Tip: Bring helmets and water. Follow clear loop markers starting from the car park.
Pump track & mini road circuit:
Kids learn balance and basic road rules on a sealed pump track and mini road features.
Tip: Use balance or child-sized bikes. Supervise younger riders near small jumps.
Picnic & grass play:
Gather at covered BBQs and spread out on the grass oval for ball games.
Tip: Arrive early to secure a table. Pack a ball or frisbee for active play.
Miniature train rides:
Hop aboard 7¼″ gauge trains running through forest bridges and a tunnel.
Tip: Runs on 1st & 3rd Sundays. Bring NZD cash ($2 per ride or 12 rides for $20).
Te Ao Kōwhai food forest:
Explore the fruit and nut plantings and sample seasonal produce.
Tip: Visit in late summer/autumn for ripe fruit. Teach kids about native rongoā plants.

One of the best finds in Christchurch. Excellent facilities for both walkers and bikers here. Great bbq and picnic areas, heaps of open space to relax in. Lots of parking and dog friendly. Had a great time here, highly recommend. Many different options of tracks to walk from short to long.

The new kids street sign area and pump track is so great. Fantastic for beginners and family mountain biking. My daughter had a wee scrape and the folks at Cycling The Dream provided us with a bandage from their big first aid box, which was much appreciated.

Best place for biking and tracking in Christchurch. Biking track is unique and nice. Forest is too cool and river side have also nice eye-catching points. Overall place is very good. Nice to go on walk with your pet and friends
Late summer/autumn offers best fruit picking in Te Ao Kōwhai. Winter trails may be muddy—bring boots. Summer days need sunscreen, hats and plenty of water. Check train run dates (1st & 3rd Sundays).
