What makes it 54% Kids-Friendly: The main tour requires age 10+ and PPE; younger kids are excluded and there is no play zone, though tram rides, markets, and cardboard-tube architecture provide some family appeal.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time to explore the square, visit the Transitional Cathedral, ride the tram, and tour restoration areas without rushing young kids.
Guided Restoration Tour:
Join a 45-minute tour behind site fences to see the cathedral’s Gothic nave and earthquake repairs.
Tip: Book online early. Participants must be 10+ and wear provided hard hat and vest. Cost NZ$25 per person.
Cathedral Square Market:
Visit on Fridays from 11 am to 9 pm for local food stalls around the square.
Tip: Let kids sample snacks, then picnic on the grass. Carry napkins and water.
Heritage Tram Ride:
Board at Cathedral Square for a loop with 18 stops, including Botanic Gardens and playground.
Tip: Buy an adult day-pass (NZ$40) and ride free with toddlers under 5. Hop off for a playground break.
Transitional (Cardboard) Cathedral:
Explore Shigeru Ban’s cardboard-tube design inside the temporary cathedral.
Tip: Entry is free until 4 pm. Kids love running through the tubes.

There was a lot of changes happened after the earthquake and sadly the Cathedral Square is of the big change! It still lovely to go walk around the square and seeing the art works and old survival building and some new buildings.

Damaged by the earthquakes, renovation is ongoing - heard the works are on hold till the church identifys the hundreds of millions needed to finish the works. Hopefully the works will finish soon and the church gets opened for visitors in our life time

The Cathedral is under renovation. Around the square there are various billboards with information about history of the Cathedral. Very good
Summer afternoons can be sunny. Pack sunscreen and hats. Rain is common in other seasons; bring a raincoat and non-slip shoes.
