Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with baby: Enough time to stroll the square, see restoration displays and visit the Cardboard Cathedral without overwhelming your baby.
Cathedral Square stroller walk:
Push your pram along the flat, paved square while admiring the Gothic sandstone façade and Neil Dawson’s Chalice sculpture.
Tip: Best in the morning before crowds arrive; stay on the wide sidewalks.
Transparent viewing corridors:
Peep through glass panels to watch skilled workers restore the original cathedral vaults.
Tip: Point out the cranes and scaffolding to spark your baby’s curiosity.
Visit the Cardboard Cathedral:
Explore Shigeru Ban’s cardboard-tube church with open floor plan.
Tip: Enter any time before 4 pm; wide doors make stroller entry easy.
Friday markets:
Sample local treats and crafts around the square every Friday 11 am–9 pm.
Tip: Pack a small picnic rug on the grass; vendors often offer baby-friendly snacks.

There was a lot of changes happened after the earthquake and sadly the Cathedral Square is of the big change! It still lovely to go walk around the square and seeing the art works and old survival building and some new buildings.

Damaged by the earthquakes, renovation is ongoing - heard the works are on hold till the church identifys the hundreds of millions needed to finish the works. Hopefully the works will finish soon and the church gets opened for visitors in our life time

The Cathedral is under renovation. Around the square there are various billboards with information about history of the Cathedral. Very good
Friday markets run year-round but peak in spring–summer. Winters can be windy and cold—dress your baby in warm layers. Showers are common any season; use a rain cover on your stroller.
