Music-box decorating and kiln fusing give hands-on fun and snacks abound, but narrow shops packed with fragile glass force parents to supervise closely and may stress younger children.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to join a family-friendly workshop and sample street snacks without rushing.
Music Box Workshop:
Decorate your own music box at the Music Box Museum.
Tip: Book a slot at least a day in advance to secure seats for your kids.
Glass-Bead Crafting:
Create colorful glass beads with staff guidance.
Tip: Arrive early to skip the afternoon queue at the bead studio.
Glass Fusing Experience:
Design a strap or chopstick rest and watch it fuse in a kiln.
Tip: Children aged 4+ can safely join; ask staff for step-by-step help.
Street-Food Sampling:
Try grilled scallops, seafood skewers, and sweet crepes from stalls.
Tip: Share small portions so kids can taste more varieties.
Self-Guided Walking Tour:
Follow a free color-coded map from the tourist office.
Tip: Pick up the map at Canal Plaza for a fun route kids will enjoy.

Parking is easy to find, with many lots available, and most charge a reasonable fee with a ...

Take your leisurely walk here and spend about 3hr or more visiting shops and trying the local food. There's a lot of things to look at. For some this will not be enough as most establishments close at 530pm

Many shops displaying glasswork, music boxes and popular characters like Snoopy and Miffy. It can be overwhelming. There are eateries, too, for rest and refreshments.

A must-go place when in Otaru. This street is way more interning than the more famous canal. There are plenty of interesting shops, for art, food, gifts etc. you can easily spend half a day here - walking from one end to another, then crossing the street for the return journey. There is parking nearby. Be prepared to spend and eat. Highly recommended. Will be back! Thumbs up!

Quaint and pretty shops decorate the street, some traditional while most have European vibes. Perhaps nex...
