Kids enter free, scan QR maps in the Ainu room, cross a koi-pond bridge and join budget tours, but there are no dedicated play areas and the tower climb has narrow stairs that demand close adult supervision.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: This gives enough time to explore the garden, hands-on exhibits, and an optional tower visit without rushing younger kids.
Red-Brick Garden Walk:
Walk across the little red-brick bridge, spot koi in the pond, and run on the lawn.
Tip: Head here first to let kids burn energy and take family photos on the bridge.
Ainu Culture & History Room:
Scan floor QR codes to learn Ainu place names and culture with your phone.
Tip: Bring a charged phone and headphones for quiet scanning sessions with kids.
Octagonal Tower Observation Deck:
Climb the tower for 360° views of Sapporo’s grid layout and surrounding mountains.
Tip: Book a 30-minute slot online in advance; arrive 10 minutes early to secure your group.
Family Premium Guided Tour:
Join a 60-minute tour focusing on the building’s Meiji-era architecture and stories.
Tip: Reserve a family slot at the front desk on arrival; tours fill fast during weekends.

Spectacular. I've lived in Hokkaido for a few years. Exploring every direction. There is so much beauty here. The Hokkaidō Prefectural Government Office building or Red brick building has been renovated. The museum offers great insight into the history of Hokkaido. It's was a truly wonderful experience.

We visited the Former Hokkaido Government Office, affectionately known as the Red Brick Office, during our walk around Sapporo and were pleasantly surprised by how charming it was. It is a beautiful place that the garden portion is opens to public. I think~ The garden itself is beautiful too with large trees, flower beds and couple ponds. I can see people sitting on the bench throughout the park next by the water or under the trees! The tulip is blooming at the time when I visit it. Great place for some nice photos!

I came here in summer 2023 and the government office building was under construction. And the front was covered. This time I got to see the real building which was very beautiful but still inside was under renovation until July 2025. Giving me more reasons to come back to visit. There’s a spot on the left side facing the building. A bridge on the pond which reminded me of Monet’s painting.
