Kids can pick fruit and learn Greek names, but there are no games, the aisles are crowded and uneven, toilets are off-site, and parents must keep children close at every moment.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: This gives time to browse stalls, taste treats, and let kids explore without rushing.
Pick-and-Taste Fresh Fruit:
Let kids choose grapes, cherries or watermelon slices at a produce stall.
Tip: Buy child-sized portions (€2–3 each) so kids can try different fruits.
Greek Word Hunt:
Walk through stalls teaching kids simple Greek words for colours and foods.
Tip: Ask vendors to repeat words like ‘kokkino’ (red) and ‘leuko’ (white).
Share a Savory Snack:
Grab a spanakopita or mini souvlaki from a food stand.
Tip: Order €2–4 portions per person and share among family.
Souvenir Spotlight:
Let each child pick a small handmade trinket at a crafts stall.
Tip: Look for magnets or bracelets starting at €5 each.
In summer (July–August), arrive by 8–10 AM to avoid heat and crowds. In winter, bring a light jacket for cool morning breezes.

The Open Air Bazaar of Heraklion is open on Thursdays and Saturdays. It is worth visiting the area with vegetables, fruits, herbs, local cheese, olives which are very fresh and tasty at lower prices. Otherwise there are many cheap clothes and shoes of very poor quality.
ROBERT HARPER
Great local market local farmer selling their produce and of course you can find knock off designer brands both clothing and perfumes

Amazing place and views..

For food lovers you will love this. Fresh, vibrant fruit, vegetables and fish, all local, all amazing quality. Watermelons the size of a dog. i wish i had taken pictures! There is also clothes, household goods and shoes to buy, a little bit chaotic, do not expect every stall has things in nice tidy racks, but enjoy the atmosphere.

Feels like an authentic local market. Everything is in Greek. Good for immersing in local culture, but not for looking for novelty.
