Couples can stroll hand-in-hand, split street food and shop for keepsakes, yet the loud calls, narrow aisles and limited seating reduce the chance for long, quiet romantic pauses.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for couple trip: Enough time to stroll stalls, sample street food, relax with coffee, and shop souvenirs without rushing.
Market Stroll:
Walk hand-in-hand through colorful stalls of fruits, vegetables, and crafts.
Tip: Start early to enjoy cooler temperatures and soft morning light.
Street Food Tasting:
Share freshly grilled souvlaki or spanakopita at a food stall.
Tip: Order one portion each to try more dishes for about €2–€4 per serving.
Iced Coffee Break:
Sit at a sidewalk café and enjoy a Greek frappé together.
Tip: Choose a shaded table on Itanou Street for people-watching and breeze.
Souvenir Shopping:
Browse handcrafted ceramics, textiles, and simple jewelry.
Tip: Look for matching ceramic magnets from €5 to bring home a pair.
In summer, arrive before 10:00 to avoid heat. In winter, carry a light raincoat for showers. During Easter the market may close or shift stalls.

The Open Air Bazaar of Heraklion is open on Thursdays and Saturdays. It is worth visiting the area with vegetables, fruits, herbs, local cheese, olives which are very fresh and tasty at lower prices. Otherwise there are many cheap clothes and shoes of very poor quality.

For food lovers you will love this. Fresh, vibrant fruit, vegetables and fish, all local, all amazing quality. Watermelons the size of a dog. i wish i had taken pictures! There is also clothes, household goods and shoes to buy, a little bit chaotic, do not expect every stall has things in nice tidy racks, but enjoy the atmosphere.

Feels like an authentic local market. Everything is in Greek. Good for immersing in local culture, but not for looking for novelty.
