What makes it 76% Kids-Friendly: Children up to 12 can enter free or reduced, burn energy in the 1873 hedge maze and explore knightly décor, yet interior staircases lack lifts and there is no playground, so plan extra supervision.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time for a castle tour, hedge maze and park play without tiring young children.
Self-guided castle tour:
Walk through neo-Gothic halls, medieval art and family chapel.
Tip: Give kids a simple checklist of armors or paintings to spot as you go.
Hornbeam hedge maze:
Explore the 1873 maze with red-and-green pathways.
Tip: Enter early when paths are clear and kids have full energy.
Park picnic & play:
Set up on the lawns by ponds and grottos for snacks and games.
Tip: Bring a blanket and simple toys like a ball to make the most of open spaces.
Bat-spotting at the ice cellars:
Watch for bats emerging at dusk near the old ice storage.
Tip: Stay quiet and let kids shine their flashlights on trees—no flash photography.

Seemed an innocuous castle but once we got in we learned just how involved it was for WW1 history. Also a great demonstration of what happens with successive generations, and what must be done. Beautiful grounds, wonderful castle, and an excellent recording of the human condition over multiple centuries.

The garden of the castle is quite pleasant, full of trees and trails to explore. We didn't visit the castle, but the architecture from the outside is impressive. There is no entry fee for the garden and there toilets available. Recommended

Very nice castle, well preserved and with a fine collection of art.

Really beautiful gardens and view from the outside. It’s free if you just explore the gardens, didn’t go inside. Worth viewing from the outside. There’s safe parking area. Would definitely recommend visiting if you’re wanting to do something for free. You do have to pay to go inside though. Very peaceful here.
Maze open April–end October. Spring brings blooming flowers; autumn leaves make the park extra colorful. Winter grounds can be muddy—wear boots.
