How Solo-Friendly is Melbourne Park?

A solo traveller can join the 75-min AO backstage tour, hire a court, jog Olympic Park Oval and attend evening concerts, all reachable on foot from CBD and safe with plenty of staff around.

Considerations for visiting Melbourne Park (solo trip)

Positives:

  • Easy navigation: Clear signage links all arenas, the oval, and Garden Square for solo explorers.
  • Solo-friendly spots: Bench seating and lawns in Garden Square work well for reading or people-watching alone.

Challenges:

  • Event crowds: Paths and eateries get busy during the Australian Open; plan extra time for queues.
  • Hot summer days: Temperatures can exceed 35°C in January; carry water and wear sun protection.

Recommended visit duration: 2-3 hours

Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for solo trip: Allows time to tour Rod Laver Arena, stroll the oval, and relax in Garden Square without rushing.

Went on a tour through Open House Melbourne. Great to see back of house at Margaret Court Arena and go on the ground at AAMI stadium. Certainly recommend people looking into attending next year's open house weekend. Free to see many places you never see normally.

Torvil and Dean spectacular. Amazing show. Great to learn about their 50 years together. Support skaters were amazing. To still be able to skate at their age is amazing. Sad to see them go however they will still be around the skating world. All the best guys you have truly been a 6!!

The home of the Australian Open this sprawling property has many large seated venues and smaller outdoor courts. The facilities are brilliant and the specific set up for the Open fantastic. The tram stops just outside. There is a bit of a pinch point getting in to the venue with bag checks and so on but this is a small issue and necessary. Once in there are cooling areas with fans and misted water...
