Mount Ainslie gives a free, moderately challenging hike, quiet viewpoints and wildlife watching that suit independent explorers; absence of summit toilets or night lighting is the only big drawback.
Why 2-4 hours visit duration is ideal for solo trip: Enough time for the summit hike, breaks at the lookout and a self-drive option
Kokoda Track Summit Hike:
Follow the sealed 4.5 km return trail from the Australian War Memorial to the summit.
Tip: Carry at least 1 L of water, wear sturdy shoes and start early to avoid crowds.
Telecom Trail Run:
Switch to the 3 km singletrack Telecom Trail for varied terrain and a faster pace.
Tip: Bring a fast-dry shirt, carry your phone for navigation and plan for uneven surface.
Birdwatching at the Lookout:
Scan the rocky outcrops and bushland for gang-gang cockatoos and grey kangaroos.
Tip: Pack binoculars, stay quiet and look low near shrubs in the early morning.
Self-drive Summit Visit:
Drive up Mount Ainslie Drive to the summit car park and walk the final ramp to the lookout.
Tip: Arrive before 10 am on weekends to secure a parking spot and bring snacks for the picnic table.
Summer can exceed 30 °C; start before 9 am and wear a hat. Winter trails may be muddy; use waterproof shoes and layer up. Spring wildflowers bloom on the slopes.

Visited this place on a wet, rainy / windy day and was really regretted the decision as there was no shade or seating place. The view could be nicer if it's a clear weather, however not recommended to visit if it's rainy as you will not most likely to enjoy. Parking is available as there are parking spots. Unable to spot any toilets around.
