What makes it 88% Kids-Friendly: Children up to 12 receive fruit and mealworms to feed birds, tick species lists, and learn wildlife care on safe pram-wide paths; sudden landings mean adults must supervise but risk is low.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: This lets families feed birds, explore paths at a relaxed pace, and take breaks without rushing active kids.
Hands-on bird feeding:
Use the included plate of apple slices and tub of mealworms to feed parrots, lorikeets, and finches up close.
Tip: Give each child a turn at feeding and move slowly so birds land on small hands.
Bird-spotting checklist:
Pick up the free “Our Birds” list at the desk and tick off species like rosellas and budgerigars as you walk.
Tip: Encourage kids to listen for calls and match colours on the boards.
Fig tree family photo:
Snap a picture under the large fig tree inside the aviary for a bright, leafy backdrop.
Tip: Plan your photo mid-visit when light filters through the leaves and birds perch above.

Lots of beautiful birds to see and interact with - and we came just in time for all the baby chickens too! Included with entry are some fruit and meal worms for the birds - they love the worms!! If you tap your arm, some of the birds will fly to you :D Will definitely come back the next time we’re in Canberra again!

This is a small aviary packed with lots of native birds especially parrots. Together with your entry fee, you receive some bird food which attracts the birds who may choose to land on your person or feed directly from your hand. Each visit buys a time slot during which you can be inside the aviary. It is a lovely experience for most people. You have to book early as it is popular and gets booked o...

Great little walk-in aviary with a cheap entry fee and super friendly staff. Lots of bird varieties to see, and you can even feed them inside. Overall, such a fun experience!

A lovely experience to have. We have been visiting Canberra for many years but had never visited the aviary until last week. It was a great experience run by lovely people. Of course, you need to expect that the birds will literally flock to you because you have food (provided with admission fee) so you’ll need to be sensible when walk it around in there. It was a lovely experience for us.
In summer, visit at opening (10 AM) to enjoy cooler temperatures and see birds feeding actively. During winter, bring a light jacket as shade under the mesh can be cool.
