What makes it 79% Kids-Friendly: School-holiday crafts, Sunday art workshops and free explorer kits give children concrete activities; interactive Aboriginal art displays add learning, but hands-on areas are limited outside program times.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: A family can explore galleries, use activity kits, and join a workshop without tiring younger children.
Borrow a Junior Explorers kit:
Pick up a free 60-minute activity kit at reception to guide kids through exhibits.
Tip: Ask staff for extra pencils and stick to the 60-minute timer to keep children engaged.
Join School Holiday Fun:
Drop-in arts, crafts and reading sessions during school breaks in the foyer.
Tip: Arrive early for popular craft tables; sessions fill fast during peak holidays.
Matilda’s Possum-skin cloak workshop:
Children aged 4–12 handle real possum-skin and make prints.
Tip: Book ahead or arrive on Sunday; bring a smock and expect a small mess.
Big Canberra sky workshop:
Kids aged 6–10 explore an exhibition then create art in the studio.
Tip: Sign up in advance; family discounts apply for larger groups.
Explore the permanent galleries:
See local history displays, Nolan Collection and Indigenous art.
Tip: Plan a short route of 3–4 key exhibits to match kids’ attention spans.

Excellent small museum/gallery showcasing mainly collections relating to Canberra. We saw the Enrico Taglietti exhibition in July. Fascinating insight into part of Canberra’s architectural history.

Beautiful staircase in the middle and a lovely planetory observatory. Found some interesting paintings and a huge lyrebird !

Loved the Canberra/kamberri people and places exhibit. The timeline layout was engaging and the story was quite funny at times.

Like almost every place I've visited in Canberra, this place didn't disappoint. And like every other place, totally wheelchair friendly. A fabulous outing with the little ones to share in a dramatics and imaginative storytelling time, followed by a wonderful time of "instrument petting". Had a lovely experience. The staff were friendly and it was small so made it quicker to get around as opposed to the national galleries. Enjoyed the diverse range of art. From the Nolan collection (more of this at the National Gallery if you like it), to jewelry, and unique glass sculptures and modern works from Lindy Lee.
During ACT school holidays, CMAG runs free drop-in crafts and reading sessions in the foyer. Check the CMAG events calendar online before you go.
