What makes it 79% Kids-Friendly: Children can safely view the falls from the fenced platform and hear the Hina legend, yet parents must supervise near slippery rocks and there are no play areas or rangers.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time to spot rainbows, picnic, explore platforms, and visit Boiling Pots without rushing.
Main viewing platform:
Walk the paved, level trail from parking to the falls platform.
Tip: Bring a stroller or carrier; step close to railing for rainbow views.
Upper overlook climb:
Climb the short rock steps for a bird’s-eye view of the falls and river.
Tip: Hold children’s hands and wear non-slip shoes on uneven steps.
Storytime at the falls:
Share the Hawaiian legend of Hina and the hidden cave under the falls.
Tip: Print or download a short version online to keep kids engaged.
Boiling Pots viewpoint:
Drive 1.5 miles upstream to see the bubbling lava-pool cascades.
Tip: Supervise kids at the railing and visit after a rain for stronger flow.
Picnic by the falls:
Use grassy areas and picnic tables near restrooms for snacks.
Tip: Bring a blanket, refillable water bottles, and pack insect repellent.
Visit between 8:30–10 AM on sunny mornings for the best rainbow formation. After rain, mist is heavier but paths may be muddy.

Beautiful water pretty much in town. Can pull up and see it from different points near the parking lit or climb up some stone steps and view the falls and the river from above. Best first thing in the morning, very serene! Highly recommend, makes a great quick stop before heading over to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park if you're staying in Hilo.

We went in the afternoon. There was little water going over the falls but it was still beautiful. I was actually more impressed by the trees when you walk up to the top of the falls to the left. This is ideal for someone who wants to see the beauty of Hawaii without having to put on your hiking boots. There is parking and bathrooms. Free. But may be difficult to get parking in peak season

Quick stop to see a waterfall in the town of Hilo. Best to see rainbow in the morning. Can view waterfall from level ground steps away from parking lot or you can take uneven, natural rock steps to view waterfall from above.
