What makes it 81% Kids-Friendly: Children up to 12 can earn Junior Ranger badges, fish with loaner rods, wade in the lower falls, and follow short loops, but adults must watch nonstop because rocks are slippery and there are no lifeguards.
Why 0.5-1 day visit duration is ideal for with kids: Gives time to hike to both falls, picnic, and join a Junior Ranger activity without rushing.
Swim at Lower Falls pool:
Shallow wide pool below cascading limestone ledges ideal for kids.
Tip: Bring water shoes for grip and watch children closely; no lifeguards on duty.
Hike Smith Rockshelter Trail:
0.7-mile loop with wooden bridges, creek views, and an ancient cypress tree.
Tip: Stay on trail markers and carry water; great spot for a family photo.
Join the Junior Ranger Program:
Free activity journal with tasks to learn about park wildlife and history.
Tip: Pick up journals at park headquarters and complete tasks to earn badges.
Picnic in shaded day-use areas:
Tables, grills, and turf areas near the falls entry.

Had a great time tent camping it was nice that there was power and running water. The fishing was great lots of good size cat fish. Bring a decent size extension cord if you want power in your tent. I had a 100-ft cord and it worked perfectly

My husband and I visited this park on a whim during our last trip to Austin to celebrate family. This park has been glued to my mind since we left. It wasn’t too hot, despite being summer in TX, thanks to the glorious amounts of shade in each area. I loved how grounding it was to be fully immersed in nature while walking the trails, exploring the creek, or diving into the swimming hole. Others at...

An amazing trails, it's easy to get around and has such beautiful sites, it was my first hike and I loved every bit of it. It also gives a history as you go through and it's really lovely so alhamdulillah for this trial. I felt safe and the people on the trails are very kind esp the workers. Thank you 🩷 it took the onion creek trail ( for hiking and bikes )

I had wanted to test my camping gear for a while and didn't know McKinney Falls state park was available right in my back yard! The staff was super friendly, the showers and bathrooms were clean (as clean as a park restroom can be) and the site offered no issues. Also the price to camp was really cheap! I'll definitely be back and going to try and plan a friends cabin weekend here at some point. H...

The campground were very nice and the access to Onion Creek to play in the water is wonderful. Unfortunately, we did not get to check out the trails. The staff, facilities, visitors center and all else was great. We'll be back for a v...
In summer, arrive early to enjoy cooler morning temperatures and less crowded pools. During rainy months, waterfalls have stronger flow but watch for slippery rocks.
