What makes it 82% Kids-Friendly: Children up to 12 can follow free animal and war trails, borrow sensory backpacks, and thrill at cannon fire, yet long climbs and limited interactive play may cause fatigue.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Gives family time to see key highlights at a relaxed pace with breaks for kids.
Into the Lion’s Den Family Trail:
Follow illustrated clues around the castle to spot hidden animals and solve puzzles.
Tip: Download the trail PDF before you go and bring a small clipboard and pencil for kids.
Watch the One O’Clock Gun Firing:
Hear the famous cannon fire at exactly 1 pm from the Upper Battery.
Tip: Arrive 10 minutes early to secure a spot and protect little ears with ear defenders.
Explore St. Margaret’s Chapel:
Visit Edinburgh’s oldest building and admire its colorful stained-glass window.
Tip: Space inside is limited—take turns entering so younger kids don’t get restless.
Discover the Crown Jewels and Stone of Destiny:
See Scotland’s royal regalia and learn the story behind the king’s coronation.
Tip: Use child-rate audio guides (£1.50) to keep kids engaged with narrations and sound effects.
Climb the Half Moon Battery for Panoramic Views:
Walk along the ramparts for sweeping views of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and plan this at the end of your visit for best light on photos.

The castle was beautiful, but I must admit that visiting such places doesn’t appeal to me, as I’m not particularly drawn to history. However, those who appreciate it would certainly enjoy the experience. Tickets can be purchased online; I bought mine as part of a combined attractions pass.

Edinburgh Castle is huge. Lots of people, lots of photo opportunities and lots of hills, steps and walking. Take your time. If history is important to you, get an audio guide. If not, skip it. Be prepared to deal with crowds and waiting in line to see the Crown Jewels. Views are amazing. Get your camera ready…you will use it.

Great piece of history for Scotland and Edinburgh. Very historical and educational. Lots of museums to go through and see. Little cafe with a great view of princess street. Would recommend a visit.

It is very beautiful though and ...
