What makes it 82% Kids-Friendly: Free animal trails, sensory backpacks and the 1 pm gun keep 5–12 year-olds engaged, yet steep stairs and mostly static exhibits demand close supervision and stamina.
Why 2–3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: A 2–3 hour visit lets a family enjoy the interactive trails, main highlights and breaks without rushing young children.
Into the Lion’s Den family trail:
Follow a map and solve clues to uncover castle animals and secret spots.
Tip: Download the PDF trail before arrival or pick up a paper version at the ticket office.

See the Honours of Scotland (Crown Jewels), the Stone of Destiny and St Margaret’s Chapel.
Tip: Visit early to avoid crowds and bring a camera for photos.
Watch the One O’Clock Gun:

Tip: Arrive 10 minutes early for a clear view on the lawn.
Climb to the Half Moon Battery:
Enjoy panoramic views of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth from the ramparts.
Tip: Bring a windbreaker—winds at the top can be chilly.
Snack at the Redcoat Café:
Halfway up the castle route, this café offers hot meals and snacks.
Tip: Budget about £7 per child and ask staff for high chairs if needed.

The castle was beautiful, but I must admit that visiting such places doesn’t appeal to me, as I’m not particularly drawn to history. However, those who appreciate it would certainly enjoy the experience. Tickets can be purchased online; I bought mine as part of a combined attractions pass.

Edinburgh Castle is huge. Lots of people, lots of photo opportunities and lots of hills, steps and walking. Take your time. If history is important to you, get an audio guide. If not, skip it. Be prepared to deal with crowds and waiting in line to see the Crown Jewels. Views are amazing. Get your camera ready…you will use it.

Great piece of history for Scotland and Edinburgh. Very historical and educational. Lots of museums to go through and see. Little cafe with a great view of princess street. Would recommend a visit.

I’d highly recommend getting the audio guide if you’re not going with a tour. Be aware that parts of the castle are steep and cobbled so challenging if you’re not have mobility issues. It is very beautiful though and ...
Summer: arrive before 10 am to beat queues and bring water. Winter: layer up for cold winds on the ramparts. Spring: enjoy longer daylight and budding flowers around the esplanade.
