  • Sensory backpacks: Borrow backpacks with tactile toys and ear defenders to help keep children comfortable.
  • One O’Clock Gun: Daily cannon firing adds a live event that thrills kids without extra charge.

Challenges:

  • Steep cobbled slopes: Wear sturdy shoes; prams struggle on uneven paths.
  • Crowds at midday: The One O’Clock Gun and main sites get busy between 12–2 pm.

The castle was beautiful, but I must admit that visiting such places doesn’t appeal to me, as I’m not particularly drawn to history. However, those who appreciate it would certainly enjoy the experience. Tickets can be purchased online; I bought mine as part of a combined attractions pass.

Edinburgh Castle is huge. Lots of people, lots of photo opportunities and lots of hills, steps and walking. Take your time. If history is important to you, get an audio guide. If not, skip it. Be prepared to deal with crowds and waiting in line to see the Crown Jewels. Views are amazing. Get your camera ready…you will use it.

Great piece of history for Scotland and Edinburgh. Very historical and educational. Lots of museums to go through and see. Little cafe with a great view of princess street. Would recommend a visit.

Walking through the castle grounds feels like stepping back in time – from the Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny to the historic Great Hall and St. Margaret’s Chapel, every corner is full of s...

The castle is so well presented for viewing from those who have very little knowledge of this beautiful building. There is a wide range of exhibits and places of interest to visit. I’d highly recommend getting the audio guide if you’re not going with a tour. Be aware that parts of the castle are steep and cobbled so challenging if you’re not have mobility issues. It is very beautiful though and ...
