What makes it 69% Kids-Friendly: School-age children like peeking inside miners’ huts and trying nearby gold-panning, but on-site has no toilets, shade, or hands-on exhibits, so parents must plan breaks in town 100 m away.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Kids can explore huts, read panels, and pan for gold without rushing.
Self-guided Settlement Walk:
Follow the flat dray-track past 21 reconstructed miner huts and read English-Chinese interpretation panels.
Tip: Let children step inside huts and imagine daily life of 1880s miners.
Gold Panning at Arrow River:
Hire a pan and shovel at Lakes District Museum to search for real gold flakes in the shallow creek.
Tip: Bring a small container for flakes and supervise kids near water.
Museum Treasure Hunt:
Pick up free themed treasure-hunt sheets at Lakes District Museum to explore indoor exhibits.
Tip: Use this activity if weather changes or to break between outdoor stops.
Riverside Picnic:
Bring packed snacks and picnic by Bush Creek, just a two-minute walk from the settlement entrance.
Tip: Pack spill-proof drinks and a blanket for grassy banks.
Cycle or Scooter on Arrow River Trail:
Ride the flat, traffic-free riverside path linking Arrowtown main street to the settlement.
Tip: Wear helmets, bring locks, and choose scooters or bikes suitable for ages 5+.

I went because of the high ratings and reviews. But was quite disappointed. Sure it has some old stone huts but that’s about it. Nothing historically spectacular. You can absolutely skip this spot and you wouldn’t miss anything.

Historical place about the gold mine and the immigrants who worked here. Now it's a peaceful place with great walking trails. Lovely time spent here walking around and reading the descriptions on the history boards.

Some interesting historical information. Flat area to walk around. Not a great deal to see. I did however see my first ever bumblebee. Much bigger than a 'normal' bee

An incredible glimpse into the history of Arrowtown and Chinese miners in New Zealand. Lots of information, and great restoration of the site. Paired with a visit to the museum nearby, it was well worth a visit!
