What makes it 86% Kids-Friendly: Kids get a pirate playground, shallow beach, pontoon and ice-cream van, and free toilets nearby, yet no lifeguards or shade sails mean parents must supervise and pack sun cover.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to swim, play, picnic and try a family kayak ride without rushing.
Safe Swimming & Pontoon Play:
Calm, shallow water makes wading easy. Swim out to the floating pontoon for jumping.
Tip: Bring water shoes and life jackets for kids. Check tide times before heading out.
Pirate-Themed Playground:
Slides, climbing frames and a sand area next to the car park.
Tip: Pack small toys or snacks and supervise children on climbing frames.
Picnic & Sand-Castle Building:
Use picnic tables or grassy terraces overlooking the bay. Dig and build in the sand.
Tip: Visit at low tide to explore rock pools. Bring a bucket, spade and beach blanket.
Family Kayak Adventure:
Rent double kayaks so a parent and child can paddle together.
Tip: Book in advance online. Wear life jackets and bring dry bags for snacks.
Ice-Cream Treat:
Seasonal van sells gelato, cold drinks and coffee beside the beach in summer.
Tip: Carry small change or EFTPOS card. Try local gelato flavors.

We enjoyed a beautiful walk connecting the small bays along the coastal track. The trail was lively with many other hikers, and the little bays made perfect spots to pause and rest. With the wildflowers in bloom, it was a truly delightful walk.

Great place for a swim or a picnic with the family. Safe to swim.

A Beautiful little bay not so far from the city. Safe to take children and they will enjoy the place. There is a track if you want to walk and enjoy the view from the top. There are toilets and place to take a shower. Good parking during the week days. Its a walk down from the parking till the bay. Beach is full of tiny shells, so be careful.

I think very underrated place in Christchurch. It's near Lyttelton, I didn't know about this place before. I saw it from Mount Vernon Lookout. Very calm and beautiful place to spend some quality time. There is walking track along side of beach. Beach is not big but beautiful. Water colour is green which makes it picturesque. Eough parking. Totally recommended.

Beautiful reserve. The beach is good. There is a small nice playground for the kids and some tables for picnic. Toilets and fitting rooms are available, though dirty. There is a shower. The parking is quite large, but some wait may be necessary on sunny days. The path to Cass Bay, makes a nice walk.
Summer: water is warmest and ice-cream van is on site. Winter: water is colder—bring wetsuits and windbreakers.
