What makes it 66% Kids-Friendly: Children can search for names and play on nearby grass, yet parents must supervise near water, maintain quiet in this memorial space, and walk 5–10 minutes to the nearest toilets.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Gives time for kids to do a name-spotting hunt, mini picnic, and short tour without rushing.
Name-spotting treasure hunt:
Kids search for two or three names on the curved marble wall.
Tip: Print a list of names and bring pencils so children can check off finds.
Mini picnic and riverbank play:
Enjoy snacks on a blanket by the north bank grass while children play nearby.
Tip: Pack simple finger foods and use shaded benches for adult supervision.
Family guided Highlights Walk:
Join a 2–2.5 hr city-and-quake tour ending at the memorial.
Tip: Book online; children under 12 join free with a paying adult.

Beautifull relaxing place by the river. A must see place after your visit to The Quake museum.

This was a somber visit for me to pay respects for those that lost their lives in 2011. The memorial is absolutely stunning and beautifully laid out, focusing on the name wall for those that lost their lives.

I cannot begin to explain how the experience made me feel. A flood of emotions and memories of the Earthquake as I walked through. There are some really cool interactive areas for the kids to spark their interests and we could have easily spent the whole day there thanks to the lego table.

I arrived an hour before closing and there were about 10 guests before me just buying tickets. Thankfully not too long a wait still. Staff were very helpful and nice. I recommend 45min-1hr minimum

it was a strong memorial for those who passed during the 2011 quake. Just next to a meandering body of water made for an excellent stop to reflect and have a quiet moment to yourself. I thought it was very good urban design and planning to get it done the way it was. really loved the tranquillity.
Visit on 22 February to attend the civic service and bell-tolling; supervised kids can lay flowers at the wall.
