What makes it 71% Kids-Friendly: Children can watch gannets from fenced platforms and play at a nearby playground; lifeguarded beach and surf lessons help, but cliffs, strong waves and no staff supervision require vigilance.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to spot gannets, let kids play, and explore rock pools without rushing.
Gannet-watching from car park viewpoint:
See nesting gannets from the Waitea Road car park viewing area.
Tip: Use binoculars and keep kids behind safety barriers at all times.
Playground and skate park:
Let kids burn energy on swings, slides, and ramps next to the picnic area.
Tip: Pack a change of clothes; the play area can get messy with sand.
Rock pool exploration:
Discover small marine life in pools near the surf tower at low tide.
Tip: Bring water shoes and supervise little ones on slippery rocks.
Short beach stroll to Māori Bay:
Walk the boardwalk to Māori Bay for cliff lava formations and sea views.
Tip: Start at low tide and use the pram-friendly path if needed.
Kids' surf lesson:
Book a beginner group lesson for ages 9+ with wetsuit and board included.
Tip: Reserve in advance on weekends; younger kids can join Mini Groms sessions.

Definitely recommend a visit to see these amazing birds in large flocks and colonies. There is a nice short hike down that gets you closer to these amazing birds. 1000s of them at various stages of breeding and hatching chicks. The beach was really good with huge waves and lots of folks surfing.

Absolutely stunning beach from both sides of the cliffs were the gannets nesting. The views from beach at their colonies is still amazing. We were lucky to go to the cave just below the gannets in low tide.
Visit between August and March to see nesting gannets. Check for track closures in winter. Plan rock pooling around low tides in summer.
