What makes it 80% Kids-Friendly: Kids get a nautical playground, skate park and safe shallows for sandcastles, plus free BBQs for parents; lack of lifeguard means adults must supervise water play closely.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Gives families enough time to play in the playground, build sandcastles, and enjoy a picnic without rushing.
Nautical Playground:
Kids can climb nets, slides and frames shaped like boats.
Tip: Apply sunscreen and supervise younger children on climbing frames.
Sandcastle & Beach Games:
Wide sandy shore ideal for buckets, spades, volleyball or frisbee.
Tip: Bring your own beach toys and a windbreak for open areas.
Picnic & BBQ:
Use the free gas BBQs and picnic tables under pohutukawa trees.
Tip: Arrive early to secure a table and pack utensils and charcoal.
Family Kayak or Paddleboard:
Rent kayaks or SUPs with child seats and life jackets.
Tip: Book 1–2 days ahead on weekends and bring water shoes for safety.
Seasonal Junk Play Events:
Free loose-parts play days with recycled materials during school holidays.
Tip: Check the Hibiscus & Bays website for event dates before you go.

My daughter loves it here where she regularly makes new friends. On a sunny day, such a great place to chill at.

A small reserve by a dog friendly beach and near restaurants. Good place to have a picnic, there is a boardwalk, playground and skate park. The place can be packed over summer and parking will be difficult.

Really nice, clean and tidy, with a beautiful view. Lots of cafes around too. Amazing playground.

One of my favourite beach in Auckland. So beautiful and just down the road to brilliant serenity, relaxing and nice people. Awesome bars , cafes and restaurants . Beautiful views of Rangitoto island. Only parking is a issue sometimes.
During summer (Dec–Feb), pack extra water, hats and shade gear for sunny days. In school holidays, check the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board site for free Loose-Parts Junk Play pop-ups.
