What is Pantheon?

  • A former Roman temple commissioned by Emperor Hadrian around 125 AD and consecrated as a Christian church in the 7th century
  • A cylindrical rotunda crowned by a coffered concrete dome pierced by a central oculus, exemplifying ancient Roman engineering
  • A remarkably intact 2,000-year-old monument with a marble-clad interior housing Renaissance-era tombs, including the tomb of Raphael

  3. Raphael’s tomb set within ancient church walls
  4. Quiet benches for solo reflection and sketching

Recommended visit duration: 1-2 hours

Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for solo trip: Solo travelers can explore the interior, observe the oculus light play, and visit Raphael’s tomb without rushing.

Solo-Friendly Activities in Pantheon

Observe the oculus light:

Sit quietly and watch the 8.9 m oculus beam move across the floor.

Tip: Head to a side pew at opening for neat light angles and minimal crowds.

Sketch or photograph the dome:

Capture the dome’s perfect sphere and marble columns.

Tip: Use a wide-angle lens or sketchbook; early morning gives soft side lighting and fewer people.

Locate Raphael’s tomb:

Find the Renaissance artist’s tomb near the church altar.

Tip: Refer to plaques on the floor; a small floor map in the guidebook helps.

Attend a Mass service:

Experience live worship in this ancient church.

Tip: Services on Saturdays at 5 pm and Sundays at 10:30 am; dress code applies.

When is the best time to visit Pantheon (Rome, Italy)?

In summer the interior stays cool but pack a light scarf to cover shoulders; in rainy months watch water fall through the oculus—bring a quick-dry jacket.

Absolutely stunning and so impressive inside! Some of the information really helped join other pieces of history we were learning together. Only €5 to get in, you don't need to prebook you can queue for the ticket office and go straight in, we only waited about 15 minutes.

Definitely a spot you do not want to skip out on. The structure is incredible but I would either buy the tickets online to skip the line unless you decide to get here super early anyways. During the day it gets super crowded and would recommend coming here early morning to get solo pictures. Cool fact is that this door is one of the oldest doors that is still standing in rome.

We just did a walk by today as we didn't have much time. We will be back for a more thorough visit next week. Like a lot of Rome, it continues to amaze us that these structures are still standing after so many years and are just wonderful to see!

This is a must visit when in Rome. Take the opportunity to walk where the emperors of Rome, this building is so old yet it is absolutely stunning. Please book your tickets in advance, and as it is a religious site can’t show your shoulders and no clothes above the knees. Getting the audio guide is also recommended as it is one of the better ones with decent voice acting and it’s also very informat...

One of the oldest buildings to stand the test of time. It's best to make reservations ahead of time. Careful though to arrive on the day and time of your ticket. They enforce the time slot. There is also the opportunity to buy a ticket at a CASH ONLY register. There is a line, but once they open it up, it moves fast.
