60%Baby-Friendly
View Map

What makes it 60% Baby-Friendly: Paths are stroller-friendly and babies ride the wheel free, but nursing rooms appear only at some fairs and diaper change is in shared toilets, so parents must plan and bring essentials.

Positives:

  • Stroller access: Wide, level paths along the moat make stroller navigation smooth.
  • Free baby perks: Children under two enter exhibitions and ride the Florence Eye for free.

Challenges:

  • Changing facilities: Permanent baby rooms are limited; rely on event lounges or the nearby UNICEF Baby Pit Stop.
  • Cobblestone surfaces: Some areas have uneven stones that may jostle a stroller.

FYI- I was told it was only for private events. So you can walk around it, see the medieval fortress from the outside, and explore the cute city park and lake nearby (Fontana della Fortezza da Basso), but you won’t be able to see much inside. I recommend a nice sit on a bench under a tree with the chirping crocuses around!!! Much of the outside of the fortress is also under construction as of July...

Whether it's a fashion event like Pitti Uomo or another international exhibition, Fortezza provides a unique and inspiring backdrop. The blend of beautifully preserved historical elements, like the ancient walls and internal monuments, with dedicated, modern exhibition spaces like the Spadolini and Cavaniglia Pavilions, creates a truly dynamic atmosphere. Beyond its impressive event capabilities, ...

Recommended doing a tour in the historical part, otherwise it's just a place for events.

Looks pretty cool outside but currently have areas under construction (maybe in preparation for the jubilee next year). Separate buildings inside where multiple events are hosted (sometimes simultaneously). Very accessible with stops for the bus and the tram just outside the entrance.

Beautiful, I made a walk all around and it changes from a relaxing European style park with pond, ducks and beautifully made fountain that looks like a spring from a rock, than urban city style then modern again. Inside there are big venues and beautifully preserved monuments.

When is the best time to visit Fortezza da Basso (Florence, Italy)?

In winter (Dec–Jan), the ice rink and Christmas market run around the moat; bring warm layers. In late April–early May, the crafts fair occupies the halls; pack light for stroller ease.
