What makes it 70% Kids-Friendly: Kids tickets, storytelling guides and lawn space entertain ages 5–12; siege trail sparks imagination, yet parents must guard narrow stairs and there is no playground or café.
Why 1-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time for a guided tour, the attacker’s trail and a relaxed picnic without rushing younger children.
Family-friendly Guided Tour:
Join a 45-minute tour of the tower house, Great Hall and battlements with child-focused stories of medieval life.
Tip: Book your tour in advance for June–September slots and arrive 10 minutes early to meet the guide.
Attacker’s Journey Trail:
Follow outdoor signage that maps the route an invading force would have taken around the castle grounds.
Tip: Pick up a free trail map at the ticket desk or print one from the castle website before you go.
Picnic on the Lawns:
Spread out on the grassy courtyard for a family picnic with views of the castle walls.
Tip: Bring a blanket, non-messy snacks and refillable water bottles; bins are by the castle gate.
River-bank Walk & Photo Ops:
Stroll along the River Clare for calm waterside views and reflections of the stone walls.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes if it’s wet and bring a camera for sunset reflections over the moat.
Friary & Village Stroll:
Cross the road to explore the 13th-century Claregalway Friary cloisters and tomb niches.
Tip: Allow 20 extra minutes; the flat paths are perfect for little legs and a smooth stroller.

I definitely do not regret visiting. Combined with the ongoing exhibition of exotic flowers, it made for a pleasant trip. However, we could see only a small part of the tower itself, and on its own it was not that impressive.

Great experience. Rooms are excellent. The tower, with all of the suits of armour, ancient weaponry, and interesting furniture and fittings, is completely accessible. Wonderful place. Lovely, helpful staff. However, I would suggest that they have a think about the breakfast they offer. There's definitely room for improvement. There's not a ton of choice. Especially for vegans. A small, but valid, ...

This castle is a magical place and a MUST SEE if you're in Ireland. The magnificence of it truly cannot be captured, it must be experienced. We had a tour by Mike, one of the people involved in the restoration of the property, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and kind. If you're lucky enough to book an AirBNB stay, it will be an experience you take with you always.

Amazing place and incredible restoration and attention to details. We have the pleasure of installing our 20x15m stretch tent here for a wedding. Stretch Tents Ireland
