What is Inchydoney Beach?

  • A long sandy beach on the Atlantic coast of County Cork, framed by two rocky headlands and dune systems
  • A designated Blue Flag shoreline stretching over one kilometre along Clonakilty Bay
  • A dynamic coastal environment shaped by Atlantic tides, featuring firm sands, dune grasslands, and tidal pools

What is so special about Inchydoney Beach for with kids?

  1. Easy free parking with two car parks next to the beach
  2. Safe swimming zone patrolled by lifeguards in summer
  3. Sandcastle kits available for lodge guests or bring your own
  4. Surf lessons for older kids and family sessions to suit all ages
  5. Outdoor showers and coffee huts nearby for quick refreshment

Recommended visit duration: 2-3 hours

Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: This allows families to build sandcastles, swim under lifeguard supervision, and fit in a surf lesson without tiring younger children.

Kids-Friendly Activities in Inchydoney Beach

Sandcastle Building & Beach Games:

Use buckets, spades, kites, and frisbees to make castles and run beach games on the firm sand.

Tip: Lodge guests get gear free. Other visitors should bring a small kit and extra towels.

Supervised Swimming:

Swim between the red-and-yellow flags in shallow water under lifeguard watch.

Tip: Check patrol hours (June–August) and have kids wear floaties if needed.

Junior Surf Lesson:

Book a 90-minute lesson with board and wetsuit for under-16s at €30 per child.

Family Surf Lesson:

Try a family group lesson for up to four people at €130 total.

Tip: Split siblings between adults so the 3-year-old can play on the shore while the older child surfs.

From June to August, lifeguards patrol daily and outdoor showers run. In spring and autumn, pack a windbreaker as Atlantic breezes can be strong. Showers may be off in drought conditions.

Very disappointed with the toilet facilities. From the beach it looks 👌 but close up it's horrendous 😕 Could easily do with a link paint and maybe more modern toilets

Absolutely stunning beach in West Cork! The scenery is breathtaking – golden sands, clear waters, and plenty of space to relax or go for a swim. It's well looked after, and there was a really peaceful atmosphere during our visit. There’s convenient parking nearby, which made access really easy, and the toilet facilities were clean and well-maintained – a definite plus.

Came during a low tide, interesting rock formations. Very exposed to the wind so bring a jacket and hat. My only negative would be that there is only one bathroom stall/men & women’s bathroom and there were a couple of school busses full of school kids wanting to change (but there are no changing areas). Cold outdoor shower to rinse off. There is a list of dog breeds that are not allowed on the be...

Then you have a large expanse of sand, rock pools and plenty of space. It was pretty quiet mid-week in May when we visited. There is plenty of parking on the road which runs alongside the beach. There are (rather disgusting) toilets just a minu...
