What makes it 62% Kids-Friendly: School-age children enjoy treasure-hunt sheets and cannons, but parents must watch them on uneven stones and low parapets; no interactive exhibits or snack kiosks on site.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to explore ramparts, play at the park and enjoy a snack without rushing younger kids.
Fortress-wall scavenger hunt:
Kids count heart-shaped bastions, spot winged lions and read the ‘OMNIPOTENS’ inscription.
Tip: Pick up the free ‘Venetian Walls Explorer’ sheet at Eleftherias Square before you start.
Playground picnic:
Small park with slides and swings at the base east of the gate.
Tip: Bring snacks, a blanket and arrive early to grab shade under the walls.
Rampart walk with sea views:
Walk up the gentle ramp to the bastion for views over the city and sea.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and go late afternoon for cooler temperatures.
Gate façade photo session:
Use the Doric columns and lion sculptures as a backdrop for family photos.
Tip: Shoot in early morning or late afternoon for the best light and softer shadows.

Very nice gate to old city from west through the old walls .local call the gate Hanioporta because is the pass from center to city's at west side of island CHANIA is the biggest at that side. Very nice stone work you can see mix of old and new work. There is a smaller gate next to the big passage.

The view is kind of nice from the walls! You just need to walk around and find your favourite one.

I was impressed for this place in my way walking to Ammoudara beach from Archeological Museum of Heraklion. I like it because it was the entrance to the city so is great that u still can see it.
In summer, visit before 11am or after 5pm and carry water, hats and sunscreen. In winter, walls can be windy—bring a light jacket.
