Kids 6-12 can treat the walk as a scavenger hunt and spot murals and crabs, yet 5 – 6 km distance, no shade, wave splash and low barriers demand close supervision, breaks and water.
Why 2–3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows a relaxed pier walk, scavenger hunt, shell collecting, and a quick fortress visit without tiring young children.
Breakwater Scavenger Hunt:
Challenge kids to find items like the green light post, a fish-shaped mural, and a distant cruise ship along the pier.
Tip: Give each child a simple checklist and reward finds with small stickers or shells.
Shell-Collecting & Tide-Pool Spotting:
At low tide, explore rocks near the pier base to find shells, small crabs, and sea creatures.
Tip: Bring a small bucket and wear water shoes; check tide tables before you go.
Half-Way Picnic & Rest Stop:
Use the public benches and toilets about halfway along the pier for a snack and a short break.
Tip: Pack sandwiches and fruit in a cooler bag and refill water bottles at the port facilities.
Koules Fortress Exploration:
Return to the old port to wander through Koules Fortress rooms and climb to the ramparts.
Tip: Kids under 5 enter free; under-25 EU citizens often have reduced rates—bring IDs.
In summer, go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the harsh sun on the exposed pier. In winter, watch for slippery spots after rain and dress in layers against sea breezes.

If you tried a walk on the high dam against the sea and felt thrilling, holy and enjoyable, believe me you are not alone. Take a walk on the wall is dangerous, but with your life risking and the same time obsessed with unstoppable sea view, I think it can be considered an experience.

In fact, it is at the end of a long pier. You come to this place when you want to get to the end of the pier, not knowing its length. And its length is approximately 3 km. Therefore, you will have to walk about 3 km one way, keep this in mind. It is a beautiful walk along the sea. Some people ride a bike, some walk, it is beautiful, picturesque, healthy.

It's only good for workout, I think light house is simple and small, but I enjoyed more the view of the sea, the port of Heraklion along the walk, so yes I give 5 stars still !

Nice walk to the light beacon. It's not really a light house, just a light on a pole. It's a 2.3km walk in each direction. There are toilets half way, and some art on the sea wall at places along the route

If you have 2-3 hours left in the early evening on your tour don't miss out on this one. The view and scenery are simply beautiful. While we sat on the walls, rested from the ~2km walk to the lighthouse and enjoyed the earthing and calming view, sailing boats returned to harbour while the sun was going down. It's these moments that make a day unforgettable.
