What makes it 70% Kids-Friendly: Kids can picnic, spot shorebirds, and count flowers on level garden paths; children 5 and under tour free, yet no playground, few interactive exhibits, and the one-hour castle tour can strain young attention spans.
Why 3-4 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to explore the formal gardens, hike forest trails, let kids play at the lagoon and enjoy a snack break.
DIY garden scavenger hunt:
Explore the Italian, Japanese and Rose gardens with a simple checklist.
Tip: Ask kids to spot fountains, bridges and count flower colors to keep them engaged.
Forest trail nature walk:
Stroll under old-growth Douglas firs and look for squirrels and birds.
Tip: Bring binoculars and talk about tree heights to make it educational.
Esquimalt Lagoon beach play:
Splash in shallow water and watch shorebirds along the lagoon.
Tip: Pack towels and extra clothes; visit at low tide for more sand.
Picnic on garden lawns:
Enjoy lunch on the grass near the rose garden under shaded trees.
Tip: Arrive early to claim a shaded spot and bring a blanket.
Guided castle tour:
One-hour tour of Hatley Castle’s main rooms and museum exhibits.
Tip: Book online in advance; best for children aged 6 and up.

Beautiful, wonderful, I will go back again and again! Will do an inside tour on my next visit for sure! This is Professor X school for the gifted in the Xmen movies and Deadpool 2. Peacocks roam freely, many squirrels. Beautiful gardens and forest all around. It's a vancouver island paradise.

I always ♥ coming here and strolling the grounds. The staff do such an amazing job tending to the gardens. The castle itself is closed to the public due to some kind of pandemic. My little place of zen is in the Japanese Garden, it is filled with tiny pagodas and a little lake/pond to sit by. It also has this tree that looks like a massive bonsai tree from certain angles. This is also the location...

The castle was cool to see, although because of COVID you can’t go inside at this time. The gardens are free to enter and are absolutely lovely! Definitely worth a stop.

Such a beautiful place to explore! Gorgeous tress, and the gardens are an amazing way to spend an afternoon wandering around! Plus, there just something about randomly wandering peacocks that add a bit of magic to your adventure!

This is a wonderful place to go with a family or for a solitary walk. There are beautiful buildings, rolling hills, fantastic views, wildlife, water and a beach. The large grounds offer places to sit and think, gardens to peruse and above all a castle. A great place for a walk, but find a place to park as it costs $1/h to park.
In spring (April–May), catch cherry blossoms in the Japanese Garden and pack rain gear. Summer gardens stay open until dusk—bring sunscreen and water. Fall trails can be muddy—wear boots. Winter café and tours run reduced hours—check online before you go.
