What makes it 91% Kids-Friendly: Children enter free, collect Xplorer booklets, join costumed drills, explore tide-pools, and climb lighthouse stairs. Flat paths and washrooms with change tables support a full day.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Families can explore the fort, join a program and visit the lighthouse without rushing younger children.
Interactive costumed programs:
Children test their skills as recruits, solve puzzles and try on uniforms with costumed interpreters.
Tip: Join morning sessions to avoid crowds and get first pick of uniforms.
Tide-pool exploration:
At low tide near the causeway, kids spot crabs, sea stars and small fish.
Tip: Check tide times at BC tide charts and wear sturdy shoes.
Snacking on Site digital tour:
Follow a 1.5 km flat loop on free Wi-Fi hotspots to learn what soldiers and keepers ate.
Tip: Bring a phone or tablet and use the venue’s Wi-Fi for smooth playback.
Picnic & heritage ice-cream:
Sit at Canteen tables and sample summer-only heritage ice cream under Garry oaks.
Tip: Pack a blanket for shady picnic spots near the grassy parade ground.
Lighthouse upper-floor games:
Older kids climb to the lantern room to play navigational video games.
Tip: Buy lighthouse tickets on site; straight stairs have handrails for safety.

I'm not sure when they start charging to enter this fort because we've been here a few times in the past and there was no entrance fee. Now it's $9.00/head. Was it worth it? Not really as there's nothing much to see except the lighthouse. There should be more things to see so it will be worth it.

It’s a great place to visit, amazing historical sites, it’s like a museum to learn the history of navy and you can touch the “long guns”. Great beach view, seals, birds, navy boats, lighthouses, great place for family to visit.

What a beautiful historic place! Staffs were friendly and very knowledgeable. My favorite was the getting to know medical case and guessing what kind of treatment they were doing at that period. The live demonstration was amazing too. Tried the ice cream here and the chocolate one was great. Good place to bring kids. Will come back!
