What makes it 49% Kids-Friendly: Sound-of-Music lore, coin-lit fresco, and cemetery walk interest older kids, but steep stairs, need for absolute quiet, no toilets, and zero child-focused exhibits curb enjoyment.

Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Offers time to climb, explore and engage kids with hands-on activities without rushing.
Climb to the novice gate:
Walk the steep stairs to the old gate where Maria von Trapp trained.
Tip: Tell kids the real Trapp family story to bring the spot to life.
Illuminate Romanesque frescoes:
Insert a €0.50 coin to light up hidden fresco details.
Tip: Let older kids each take a turn for a fun, interactive moment.
Family photo at the abbey gate:
Pose where movie scenes of The Sound of Music were filmed.
Tip: Visit in morning light for soft shadows and fewer crowds.
Explore the adjoining cemetery:
Stroll among historic gravestones and read simple inscriptions.
Tip: Turn it into a word hunt by spotting German words like 'Hier ruht'.

Difficult to find, but absolutely worth the trek to get there. Beautiful graveyard and views of the city that are breathtaking. We came here originally as part of our self guided Sound of Music tour.

We took 25 fm the train station area and walk up to the church, the church is open to public. Nice and rustic, beauitful view from the higher ground. We didnt have to purchase any tickets. Nice place, though a far walk back to the bus station.

Visiting Sift Nonnberg was a moving experience. Time has stood still since the time Sound of Music, the movie, was shot there in relation to "Maria". I guess since many many decades before that as well.

Iconic abbey from the movie the Sound of Music. The gates to access the small inner yard and the huge metal doors to access the chapel. People may come in and light a candle. Keep silence 🤫🙏
In winter, wear boots and watch for icy stairs. In summer, aim for early visits to stay cool on the exposed terraces.
