Positives:

  • Serene atmosphere: Early chant offers a nearly private concert space.
  • Self-paced visit: No guided group means you set your own pace through cloisters and church.

Challenges:

  • Steep access: Reach the convent via narrow, uneven Nonnbergstiege steps.
  • Exact change needed: Bring small coins to light the frescoes; no change machine on site.
  • Limited English signage: Download or print a guide before arrival for full context.

Quiet a good walk to reach to the Abbey, but it’s worth it. If you are a fan of The sound of Music, you will know this place where Maria walks out and ventures towards her journey to the Von Trappe family. It’s free and a peaceful place to visit.

Nonnberg Abbey was in the movie, The Sound of Music. This Abbey is lovely. I wanted to see it and it was worth a visit while being in Salzburg.

When is the best time to visit Nonnberg Convent (Salzburg, Austria)?

In winter, chant occurs before sunrise—bring a warm jacket and flashlight. In summer, arrive early to avoid sun and small tour groups.
