What makes it 58% Kids-Friendly: School-age children can spot Sound of Music filming spots and press the coin box light, yet the church expects hush, has no interactive exhibits or toilets, and steep stairs demand hands-on supervision.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time to climb the stairs at a child-friendly pace, explore the church, courtyard and light the fresco without rushing.
Climb Nonnbergstiege:
Ascend the over 200 stone steps from the Old Town to reach the convent.
Tip: Use handrails and rest on benches to pace children during the climb.
Activate the ‘Paradise’ Frescoes:
Insert €0.50 into the slot to illuminate 12th-century wall paintings beneath the choir.
Tip: Let each child take a turn to press the coin for a fun interactive moment.
Spot Saint Erentrudis Statue:
Find the Gothic statue of the first abbess in the entrance archway.
Tip: Turn it into a game: who spots her crown first wins a small treat.
Relive The Sound of Music:
Stand in the courtyard where Maria sang and look out over the steps she walked.
Tip: Show kids a movie still on your phone to imagine the scene.
Explore the Cloister Courtyard:
Walk the enclosed courtyard with its vaulted arcades.
Tip: Let younger kids move freely in the safe, traffic-free space under supervision.

Quiet a good walk to reach to the Abbey, but it’s worth it. If you are a fan of The sound of Music, you will know this place where Maria walks out and ventures towards her journey to the Von Trappe family. It’s free and a peaceful place to visit.

Nonnberg Abbey was in the movie, The Sound of Music. This Abbey is lovely. I wanted to see it and it was worth a visit while being in Salzburg.
In summer, start before 10 AM to beat crowds and heat. In winter, wear sturdy shoes as steps get icy.
