How Kids-Friendly is FestungsBahn?

80%Kids-Friendly
View Map

What makes it 80% Kids-Friendly: Kids thrill at the steep ride, cannons and marionette museum, yet sheer drops and many stairs mean adults must supervise closely and bring water, so the venue is fun but not flawless for children.

  • Weather Exposure: The open terrace can be windy or wet; bring jackets and non-slip shoes.

Rising slowly above the rooftops of Salzburg, the FestungsBahn feels less like a ride and more like a gentle ascent into history, where baroque domes, cobbled streets, and golden light unfold like a timeless painting beneath the sky. #salzburg

We had purchased tickets ahead so we just walked on. Great view of the city. Short ride but much better than walking.

It’s a quick, steep, and scenic ride that saves you the uphill climb while offering beautiful views over the city rooftops. I boarded from the lower station after exploring the Old Tow...

A great way to get up to the Salzburg fortress! The entry was included in our Salzburg card, so we were able to get right in. They packed the cars rather full so it got very hot, especially coming down later in the day, but it was still preferable to climbing up ourselves.

Handy funicular up to the castle from the cathedral. Round trip is included in the castle tickets. The basic ticket with funicular, panorama tour and museums is great. 14,50 euros for adults.

When is the best time to visit FestungsBahn (Salzburg, Austria)?

In summer (May–Sept), join the free 30-minute morning tours. In winter, the terrace can be icy—dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes.
