What makes it 60% Kids-Friendly: School-age children can enjoy the nature playground and a short riverside loop, yet the 10 km route to the spring and scarce toilets make it tiring for under-12s and require close supervision.
Why 3-4 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to explore the playground, river viewpoint and return without rushing younger children.
Nature-play playground at Holzerhütte:
Climb and explore wooden play structures made of natural materials.
Tip: Visit first to let younger kids burn energy and use nearby restrooms at the Info Centre.
Family walk to the first river viewpoint:
Flat 1.6 km path from the playground to a scenic turquoise river outlook.
Tip: Pack snacks and sit on the benches by the river for a break before returning.
Easy bike loop with child-sized rentals:
4–6 km gravel path loop from Scharnitz Info Centre past playground and river viewpoint.
Tip: Reserve child bikes in advance and always wear helmets.
Half-day hike to Kastenalm hut:
5 km gentle uphill trail to a mountain hut serving Tyrolean snacks with alpine views.
Tip: Bring water and plan for lunch at the hut; older kids (age 8+) will enjoy the longer walk.

We had fun with the family and we went swimming in the middle of the cold river in the summer. I recommend visiting it

Nice walk on long forest road up to Hallerangerhaus. The road is steep at the end and gravel all the way to he Hütte. No problems walking in the rain. Beautiful scenery

Well, this is such a beautiful route along the river between high mountains to reach the source of Isar from Scharnitz. Good road conditions for cycling 🚴♂️ even with a kids trailer attached. Highly recommended for a day/half a day trip.

Incredible bike path and astounding views
From June to October the Kastenalm and Info Centre are open; wildflowers bloom in July. Spring trails can be muddy—wear waterproof shoes. In summer, start early to avoid midday sun.
