What makes it 90% Kids-Friendly: School-age children can sit in cockpits on open days, follow kid-friendly tours, and use flat paths safely, but height limits bar under-14s from main simulators, so thrills vary by age.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: A few hours lets the family enjoy guided tours, cockpit access events, and picnic breaks without rushing.
Join a free guided hangar tour:
Volunteer guides share child-friendly stories and point out fun aircraft facts.
Tip: Arrive early to secure front-row spots and ask questions to keep kids engaged.
Sit in real cockpits on event days:
On Open Cockpit & Engine Run Days, kids can enter cockpits like Mirage and watch engines roar.
Tip: Check the museum calendar online before visiting and arrive 15 minutes early for engine runs.
Experience VR FA-18 simulator:
Kids try a free VR flight at special events like “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
Tip: Book events in advance; slots fill up fast.
Picnic in Hangar 2:
Use undercover picnic tables and space for board games or colouring with kids.
Tip: Bring snacks and a blanket; Hangar 2 has baby-change and toilets nearby.

Explore 80+ restored planes at your own pace and snap family photos.
Tip: Grab the museum map at the entrance and create a simple scavenger hunt for kids.

Cool museum with a lot of different planes and helicopters. Must stop if you like aviation. Definitly have a chat with the volunteer guides as well! We spoke with Noel and that was really interesting! A lot of knowledge and experience there. All in all a nice stop along our east coast trip.

I would fully recommend visiting this lovely museum in Caloundra near the sunshine coast. We were travelling back from Hervey Bay and as a aviation enthusiast I had to call in. I booked the F-111 Cockpit Experience tour in advance and wasn't disappointed. My guide and instructor was David Dunlop a former RAAF pilot on the F-111. It's was a thorough tour, made even better by the great hospitality g...

My girlfriend and I had a really informative and enjoyable time here! Thank you to Brian for giving an extremely detailed and insightful tour inside several aircraft, including the P-3. I never thought I’d get to see the interior! We also enjoyed talking to David, a former F-111 pilot with the RAAF who took us through the aircraft and what it was like flying it. I would highly recommend any aviati...

Recommended by family, popped in for a visit and was welcomed by super friendly staff and volunteers. Really good value for how big the museum is, and had a few staff explain some of the aircraft and told some great personal stories from their time flying. Sat in the cockpit of the Lockheed AP-3C with one of the staff had lots of laughs. Will most definitely come back next time on the sunny coast.
