Positives:

  • Free entry and parking: Access to the wreck and street parking on Socrates Parade are complimentary.
  • Onsite facilities: You have toilets, cold-water showers, picnic tables and a water fountain at the trailhead.

Challenges:

  • Beach access via stairs: Wooden stairs lead to the sand—you’ll need to fold and carry prams or heavy gear.
  • Limited shade: The snorkel trail and beach have little cover—bring hats, sunscreen and portable shade.

What is Omeo Wreck?

  • A 19th-century iron steamship deliberately scuttled in 1927 off Coogee Beach, now resting in 2–5 metre waters
  • Core element of the Coogee Maritime Trail, enveloped by 55 purpose-designed reef modules and underwater sculptures
  • Artificial reef habitat that fosters diverse marine life around its corroded hull and adjacent seabed

What is so special about Omeo Wreck for with kids?

  1. Easy shallow snorkel over a real steamship wreck and art installations
  2. Calm beach zone for wading, marine life spotting and sand games
  3. Free entry, parking plus toilets, showers and picnic shelters at the trailhead
  4. Nearby shops rent masks, fins and bodyboards for added fun and safety
  5. Early low-tide visits give clearer water and fewer crowds

Recommended visit duration: 2–3 hours

Why 2–3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to snorkel the wreck trail, play on the beach, rinse off and enjoy a picnic without tiring younger kids.

Kids-Friendly Activities in Omeo Wreck

Snorkel the Omeo wreck art trail:

Follow the 200 m underwater path to see the historic steamship hull and reef sculptures.

Wading and beach play:

Use the calm, shallow water near shore to spot small fish and starfish.

Tip: Bring buckets, spades and pool noodles. Keep kids within 5 m of shore and wear sun hats.

Picnic and rinse-off:

Use the undercover tables, grassy lawns, outdoor showers and toilets near the trailhead.

Tip: Pack a picnic to avoid walking for food. Rinse salt off in the showers before heading home.

Bodyboard and flotation fun:

Hire or bring bodyboards, kickboards or pool noodles for extra safety and play.

Tip: Rent gear at local surf shops or bring your own to save time. Let kids swap between floating and snorkeling.

Great location for snorkeling and swimming. The shower they have set up there is quite painful & poorly designed, you will hear my sister cursing the creator in the video I've shared. At this current date they have built some brand new toilet facilities but they're out of order. To access the water and swim around the wreck you need to go downstairs so keep that in mind. There is a drink fountain ...

Was a great family thing to do snorkelling over and around the wreck. Got to see lots of fish but many were the same species. Also swam out to the slide which the grandchildren really enjoyed. Outdoor showers to wash off and a lovely area for a picnic on the grass. Would recommend for everyone.

Fun spot to snorkel to see the shipwreck and all the marine life inhabiting there. Accessible from the stairs or a walk/swim from the beach.

Such a beautiful place. Very calm beach 🏖️ with not much of a crowd. Shipwreck from shore can only be seen a little. But if you are good at diving 🤿 or snorkeling 🤿 you will get a great view underwater. You too have a lot of things to explore underwater. There is a ramp created over the rock 🪨 direct from the walkway to the sea 🌊 which I felt is an awesome super cool experience The sunset v...
