How Solo-Friendly is Split Point Lighthouse Tours?

A solo traveller can climb 136 steps, read historical panels, and enjoy quiet coastal trails for photos; lack of public transport and no onsite café are the main drawbacks.

Considerations for visiting Split Point Lighthouse Tours (solo trip)

Positives:

  • 360° Coastal Views: Top balcony offers full panorama of the Shipwreck Coast and Otway Ranges.
  • Interactive Exhibits: Interpretive panels at each landing provide context on local history.

Challenges:

  • Narrow Spiral Stairs: Stairs are tight and steep; not suitable if you have vertigo or mobility issues.
  • Exposure to Elements: The top balcony has no shelter; strong wind and rain can be uncomfortable.

Recommended visit duration: 0.5-1 hour

Why 0.5-1 hour visit duration is ideal for solo trip: Enough time to climb the lighthouse, join a tour, and walk nearby trails.

We visited yesterday May 26th. Our guide was really good. So passionate and gave us such interesting information. The view from the top was beautiful. This is a great stop when driving the Great ocean road. The general store in Airey's Inlet is also a good stop if you need to pick up things.

What a view!! Pay the small fee, you won’t regret the views & historical points when climbing this lighthouse. The ladies on duty were friendly & fun. The height was a bit daunting initially but didn’t take long to acclimate. Highly recommended!!

Would highly recommend to visit this place. It has amazing views. You can reach to the lighthouse from two sides one is steep path after you park your car and walk but there is another path where when you park your car you can easily walk to the lighthouse good for people with pram.

Split point lighthouse was constructed in 1891 to ensure the safe navigation of ships through Bass strait. You can visit this place on the way to the Great Ocean road. There is a nice lookout at this place.
