Positives:

  • Safe shallow water: The gentle slope and low waves create a safe paddling area for children.
  • Accessible paths: Beach matting and wide promenades allow easy pram and wheelchair access.

Challenges:

  • Limited shade: Few natural shade spots on the sand—bring an umbrella or pop-up tent.
  • Sandy surfaces: Fine sand can get into shoes and gear—pack shake-out mats and extra towels.

Such a lovely place to chill out on a hot day and enjoy the cold water, listen to the breeze and feel the sand. Once upon a time on my birthday, I celebrated here with pizza and chips! The beach has indeed had more aesthetic changes but It's still a pleasure to visit.

The new pier and esplanade is the best thing the Council has done for a long time. An eyesore to a beautiful and a location that the Altona community should be so proud of.

Altona Beach has always been a great spot, but the upgrades along the Esplanade have made it even better. The new wide paths and beach access ramps make it easier for everyone to enjoy, and the seating, shade areas, and landscaping give it a really welcoming feel. The closure of part of the Esplanade to traffic has made it safer and more relaxing to walk between the beach, pier, and shops. The new...

Beautiful beach for a day out. Plenty of shade in the afternoon in the west side of the beach. Good for cycling or a beach day picnic. It does get crowdy over weekend but we were still able to find parking. Also the parking is free on the road. There are toilets in the nearby parks so be ready to walk slightly if you need to go 😅. Recommend place to visit.

When is the best time to visit Altona Beach (Melbourne, Australia)?

Visit between December and March to enjoy free beach wheelchair hire and misting jets. Outside summer, water is cooler but the pier stroll stays calm and quiet.
