What makes it 79% Baby-Friendly: Beach-mat paths suit prams, a hoist-equipped change room (MLAK key) aids changing, calm shallows and pine shade help comfort; no dedicated indoor nursing room may limit some carers.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with baby: Allows time to stroll on the matting, splash in shallow water, and picnic under the pines without rushing.
Stroll on the Esplanade to the water's edge:
Use the plastic beach matting from the foreshore to the calm bay.
Tip: Bring a pram with large wheels and use the permanent matting path for a smooth ride.
Splash in the gentle shallow bay:
The bay's small waves and gradual slope are safe for baby water play.
Tip: Bring a sun hat and swim nappies; set up near the water at low tide for minimal waves.
Picnic under Norfolk Pines at Logan Reserve:
Relax in the shade with picnic tables, barbecues, and open grass.
Tip: Arrive before 11 am to secure a spot near the playground and pram path.
Hire a free beach wheelchair:
Use Sandcruiser or child-size Sandpiper chairs on weekends from December to March.
Tip: Book online ahead via Hobsons Bay website and arrive by 12 pm for a smooth start.
Enjoy a café snack with baby-change facilities:
Esplanade cafés offer high chairs and nearby change tables.
Tip: Check toilets for accessible baby-change amenities before ordering.

Such a lovely place to chill out on a hot day and enjoy the cold water, listen to the breeze and feel the sand. Once upon a time on my birthday, I celebrated here with pizza and chips! The beach has indeed had more aesthetic changes but It's still a pleasure to visit.

The new pier and esplanade is the best thing the Council has done for a long time. An eyesore to a beautiful and a location that the Altona community should be so proud of.

I had a good day with my kids. Nice beach. There are a lot of coffee shops, restaurants, etc....around the beach.

Altona Beach has always been a great spot, but the upgrades along the Esplanade have made it even better. The new wide paths and beach access ramps make it easier for everyone to enjoy, and the seating, shade areas, and landscaping give it a really welcoming feel. Beautiful beach for a day out. Plenty of shade in the afternoon in the west side of the beach. Good for cycling or a beach day picnic. It does get crowdy over weekend but we were still able to find parking. Also the parking is free on the road. There are toilets in the nearby parks so be ready to walk slightly if you need to go 😅. Recommend place to visit.
Free beach wheelchair hire runs weekends from December to March; book online. Summer UV is strong from 11 am–3 pm—pack sunscreen and shade. In winter, bring a windbreaker for bay breezes.
