What makes it 78% Solo-Friendly: The lookout gives solo visitors free parking, panoramic views, walking and cycling paths, and wildlife photography spots, but the total lack of toilets limits how long you can comfortably stay.
Why 3-4 hours visit duration is ideal for solo trip: Allows time for the Molonglo River Circuit, birdwatching and a short paddle session without rush.
Molonglo River Circuit walk:
Complete the easy 7 km loop from the lookout along riverside trails.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and carry water; trail crosses the river in spots.
Birdwatching at Lake Burley Griffin:
Spot pelicans, swans and cormorants in the wetlands near the dam.
Tip: Bring binoculars and a field guide; best viewing in early morning.
Kayak or SUP to the dam:
Paddle out 10.8 km on Lake Burley Griffin to reach the dam wall.
Tip: Check wind conditions, wear a lifejacket and book rental in advance.
Fitness run or cycle on the dam path:
Use the sealed path across and downstream of the dam for intervals.
Tip: Aim for off-peak times for a quieter route and clear views.
Photography and sketching:
Capture or draw the dam’s concrete structure and changing water patterns.
Tip: Pack a compact tripod or sketchbook and arrive before golden hour.

Nice location to park cars and go for a short walk. No toilets found. Just for sightseeing only.

Very close to city and close to the zoo. The water coming out from the dam was very low volume. It is scenic though and very good for walks and cycling. Not very crowded and you can find solace here.

Great place. Enjoy the gushing water and stroll around the scenic gardens around. The whole area is very nice. Walk along the pedestrian pathway on the bridge. Look over the dam into the creek. And if u look far out appx 1 o clock 500m..u may even see a giraffe as the zoo is next door. Great place for a picnic too.

Worth a stop for 15-20 mins if the weather's dry, to take in the scenery and see how the Scrivener Dam works. Close to the Zoo and the Arboretum so doing a trip to either of those from the City, will bring you here.

Handy lookout spot at the Spillway. Parking available and something to do and see close to Govt House Lookout and Arboretum. Water flowing the day we went, lots of recent rain in Canberra
Spring brings wildflowers along the Molonglo trails and migrating birds; summer days can be hot—start before 9 am and pack sun protection; winter mornings are crisp with clear views—dress in layers.
