What makes it 60% Kids-Friendly: Children like the flat dam-crest walk, bird-spotting and bike ride, but unfenced water edges and no toilets mean constant supervision and off-site bathroom stops are essential.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time for a dam walk, wildlife game, picnic and short bike ride without rushing kids.
Short dam crest walk:
Follow the 200 m paved path across the dam wall.
Tip: Hold hands near rail edges and stop for photos at the mid-point.
Wildlife spotting game:
Spot pelicans, black swans, dragonflies and native fish along the water edge.
Tip: Print a simple checklist and give each child a pencil to tick off sightings.
Picnic & BBQ play:
Use covered tables and built-in BBQs beside the dam under eucalypts.
Tip: Bring your own food, water and picnic rug. Supervise kids when toasting marshmallows on the BBQ.
Family bike ride:
Cycle the smooth shared-use path over the dam and along Lake Burley Griffin’s shore.
Tip: Ensure all helmets fit. Pack spare tubes and remind kids to keep left.
Optional dam tour:
Join the 1-hour National Capital Authority guided tour on selected dates.
Tip: Book in advance on Eventbrite. Check age guidance before reserving if children are under 6.

Nice location to park cars and go for a short walk. No toilets found. Just for sightseeing only.

Very close to city and close to the zoo. The water coming out from the dam was very low volume. It is scenic though and very good for walks and cycling. Not very crowded and you can find solace here.

Great place. Enjoy the gushing water and stroll around the scenic gardens around. The whole area is very nice. Walk along the pedestrian pathway on the bridge. Look over the dam into the creek. And if u look far out appx 1 o clock 500m..u may even see a giraffe as the zoo is next door. Great place for a picnic too.

Worth a stop for 15-20 mins if the weather's dry, to take in the scenery and see how the Scrivener Dam works. Close to the Zoo and the Arboretum so doing a trip to either of those from the City, will bring you here.

Handy lookout spot at the Spillway. Parking available and something to do and see close to Govt House Lookout and Arboretum. Water flowing the day we went, lots of recent rain in Canberra
In summer bring hats, sunscreen and plenty of water. In spring enjoy bird activity and wildflowers. In winter wear layers and check wind gusts before heading out.
