Couples can share summit views and quiet picnic tables, choose easy or moderate trails, and watch birds, but the lack of evening lighting and limited toilets lowers comfort for a long romantic stay.
Why 0.5-1 day visit duration is ideal for couple trip: This timeframe lets you hike key trails, picnic, and catch views at a relaxed pace.
Forest Loop Walk:
A 2 km return trail circling the summit forest.
Tip: Start at the car park halfway up Black Mountain Drive for easy access.
Summit Walk:
A 2.4 km return hike from the Botanic Gardens gate with steeper sections.
Tip: Aim to arrive before sunset for city skyline views.
Picnic at the Lookout:
Quiet picnic tables near the halfway parking area.
Tip: Pack snacks and a blanket to enjoy bush views without crowds.
Birdwatching:
Spot species like Scarlet Robin and Gang-gang Cockatoo along trail interpretive signs.
Tip: Bring binoculars and walk slowly at dawn to see more birds.
Bushland Nature Walk at ANBG:
A 3 km loop with interpretive signs and a lookout over Lake Burley Griffin.
Tip: Combine with your hike by entering from the Gardens Visitor Centre.
In spring, spot blooming orchids along the Link Walk. In summer, hike early to avoid midday heat. Autumn brings cooler temperatures and clear skies for views.

Absolutely beautiful view from the top of Black Mountain with a great, steep walk up with plenty of things to look at, like the kangaroos, views and getting closer to the top of the mountain. Definitely one of the best nature reserves in Canberra, Telstra Tower is unfortunately closed but the view makes it worth it for me.

Unfortunately the tower is closed so the view is not what it used to be. There are a couple of lookouts just before the top that provide a partial view of the city.

Wish the tower was open. No real views since you can't go higher than the trees. Telstra really needs to do the renovations on the tower so us tourists can view that wonderful scenery again.
