What makes it 57% Kids-Friendly: Children can spot turtles, fish license-free, and complete nature scavenger hunts, but parents face zero toilets, no playground, and deep water edges, so supervision and short visits are essential.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Enough time to complete a short hike, wildlife scavenger hunt, picnic, and a calm paddle without rushing.
Nature Scavenger Hunt:
Follow a color-coded section of the West River Shoreline Trail and look for birds, turtles, and frogs.
Tip: Bring the free trail map and a simple wildlife checklist to guide kids’ discoveries.
Family Shore Fishing:
Cast lines from the shoreline for panfish and perch.
Tip: Kids under 16 fish free; adults need a New York State freshwater fishing license.
Riverside Picnic:
Set up a snack stop near the water with blankets or folding chairs.
Tip: Pack your own water and snacks and carry out all trash—there are no picnic tables.
Calm Slough Paddle:
Use a tandem kayak or canoe to explore quiet marsh channels.
Tip: Bring your own boat and life jackets for kids; choose a calm day for smooth paddling.

It's a nice walk but it's not exactly scenic. If you have a dog with you then this is a great choice. That being said, people need to actually take the poop bags out with them. I guess at least they bag it up, but seriously, don't just leave it.

Great trails for gravel bike riding.

Easy to walk on well-maintained level trails, though signage would be helpful. Nice forested area along the river, an abundance of wildflowers in the marsh area. Not a lot of wildlife, though it was busy when I was there. I was happy to find a kayak launch, so I'll be going back to try that approach. Walked under the Grand Island Bridge to the end of the peninsula and could see not only intake...

Recently I visited this place. In the fall it has another beauty than summer 😄. The place is very quiet and peaceful. Be careful while you are walking through the trail. I saw a snake this time. Moreover, I didn't find any restroom which was pathetic 😞.

Took an impromptu hiking trip with flip flops in the rain! It was a blast we saw a red squirrel, a toad, egrets or some aquatic bird, a blue herring and siren head. The trails were pretty flooded which made it more fun. It is a beautiful hike.
Spring trails can be muddy—wear boots. Summer brings mosquitoes—apply repellent. Fall offers colorful leaves and cooler air.
