Positives:

  • Shaded Facilities: Covered pavilions and coconut trees offer shade for baby care and picnics.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Green and hawksbill turtles often rest onshore, viewable from a safe distance.
  • Stroller Accessible: Paved paths from parking to pavilion ease movement with a stroller.

Challenges:

  • No Dedicated Baby Stations: Restrooms lack changing tables and nursing rooms; bring a portable pad.
  • Hot Black Sand: Sand heats up quickly in sun; use shaded areas and avoid midday visits.
  • Unsafe Water for Babies: Strong currents and rocky shoreline make wading unsafe for babies.

This beach is very beautiful but can get very windy. Google maps took us to the parking lot closest to the camp sites, which I do not recommend since it is very far from the bathrooms and showers. The sand is so dark and sparkles in the sun. We swam at the little beach closest to the camp sites, I strongly recommend wearing water shoes. The beach is beautiful and sandy until you’re in the water, t...

Enjoy a fresh coconut while visiting black sand beach. Didn’t get to see the turtles due to rough conditions but grateful to be able to see Gods creation. 🏖️

Definitely stop and take a barefooted stroll through the black sand at Punalu'u Beach on Big Island. One of the few black sand beaches in the world it is easy to pull off the highway and find a place to park. Public restrooms are at the parking lot. There is a snack bar that is open some days. The beach is a turtle nesting area. A great place to see the sea turtles up close. Remember to leav...

I found a unique black sand beach with sea turtles and coconut palms. The mix of volcanic sand, clear water, and active wildlife makes it a great stop
