What makes it 88% Couple-Friendly: Partners gain romantic sunrise views and picnic spots at no cost, but the last rocky climb is steep and may feel tough for less active or height-sensitive visitors.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for couple trip: Allows time for the summit hike, a picnic by the loch, and return at a relaxed pace.
Sunrise or Sunset Summit Hike:
Climb Volunteer’s Walk to the summit at dawn or dusk for sweeping city and Firth of Forth views.
Tip: Start 45 minutes before sunrise or sunset. Wear layers and bring a headlamp if hiking in low light.
Panoramic Photos on Radical Road:
Stroll along the ridge path at mid-height for framed views of Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town.
Tip: Carry a wide-angle lens or phone adapter. Visit midweek to avoid weekend crowds.
Romantic Picnic at St Margaret’s Loch:
Descend via the western path to a grassy bank by the loch for a peaceful meal.
Tip: Pack snacks and a lightweight blanket. Feed ducks with unsalted nuts.
Summer offers long daylight but requires sun protection; winters can be windy and cold—check forecasts and start early; spring wildflowers bloom on the slopes and autumn brings colorful foliage around the park.

Ahhh what a beauty. I love her. So pretty. So stunning. She’s like a Scottish Pride Rock. Pro tip is to follow the road all the way around. The views of her backside are even better.

Great little hike to the top. Accessible for most able-bodied people but not wheelchairs or buggies etc. Swarms of insects at the top and can get quite crowded. Some loose scree etc.to scramble up for a quicker route but a reasonable, less steep footpath also gets you to the top for wonderful views over city, fields and the bay.

Be aware that it gets very windy at the top, no matter what the weather is like at the bottom. The trail is straightforward to follow and can be done in trainers -hiking shoes aren’t necessary. The views are absolutely stunning and make it well worth going for sunrise or sunset.

A fairly easy hike with stunning views across Edinburgh. When it is wet it can be incredibly slippy when climbing up but if you take care it is a really enjoyable walk.
