Positives:

  • Quiet tasting environment: The small café seating at Brescó lets solo travelers enjoy a peaceful break without crowds.
  • Central Modernisme spot: Casa Calvet sits on a key modernista route, making it easy to continue your walking tour.

Challenges:

  • No public interior tours: The building’s interior is closed except for the ground-floor restaurant, so you can’t see Gaudí’s original room designs.
  • Limited solo dining at China Crown: China Crown often requires larger tables and higher minimum spends, so it may not suit individual diners.

  • A façade distinguished by baroque-inspired stone carvings, wrought-iron balconies and subtle organic motifs that showcase Gaudí’s early modernisme style
  • An award-winning structure that won Barcelona’s city architecture prize in 1900 and now forms part of the UNESCO-listed Works of Antoni Gaudí

  2. Photograph unique Gaudí façade details free of charge.
  3. Combine with a self-guided Modernisme walking route.

A little disappointed by the preview I read on the website. Since you can't visit Casa Velvet (it's a private home), they recommend admiring Gaudí's works inside the cafe. Honestly, there wasn't any of that, and the breakfast selection was limited. Perhaps the restaurant next door offers more. Not worth it.

Casa Calvet, built between 1898 and 1900, is Gaudí's first work in the Eixample and is considered one of the architect's most conservative, with certain Baroque references. Located at Carrer de Casp, number 48, it is a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN).

After going to Casa Milà and Casa Battló, it was refreshing not to deal with the crowds. In fact, there was only us. It is a bit more subtle work by Gaudí but certainly still great. There is a coffee shop on the ground floor so a good place to take a break.

Gaudi's less spectacular, less popular building, but it is still worth seeing alongside the other Gaudi Casas.

The building is beautiful, though I must admit it's a far cry from Gaudí's style. Walking past, you might miss it. It's worth seeing to see a different side of Gaudí.

When is the best time to visit Casa Calvet (Barcelona, Spain)?

In summer, cool off with an iced chocolate at Brescó; in winter, the hot chocolate and coffee feel extra comforting.
